Most of the material on the history of the Birr telescopes is taken from Patrick Moore's excellent book: "The Astronomy of Birr Castle", originally published by The Telescope Trust in 1971, and reprinted in June 1981, by The Tribune Printing and Publishing Group, Birr. Copies of this book are on sale at Birr Castle.

The information on the recent restoration of the telescope was provided by:

Sean Connaughten, who also loaned photographs and other material relating to the restoration.

In addition, Michael Tubridy's book "Reconstruction of the Rosse Six Foot Telescope", published in 1998 by Brosna Press, proved an invaluable source of material relating to the reconstruction. This book is also available for purchase at Birr Castle.

Other sources of information include:

  • Unusual Telescopes by Peter L. Manly published by Cambridge University Press

  • The History of the Telescope by Henry C. King published by Dover Publications
